چکیده

This paper reviews available models for estimating surface erosion and sediment delivery to streams from unsealed roads. It summarises current progress and identifies directions for ongoing research and model development. The paper provides a framework for assessing road erosion and sediment delivery models and it includes an overview of road erosion and sediment delivery processes and how they are commonly represented in models. Seven road models are reviewed in terms of their representations of erosion and sediment delivery processes, assumptions, application and limitations. While simple models are thought to be more useful and easily applied for land management purposes, more complex models provide a basis for building and consolidating scientific knowledge. This article reveals some of the limitations and needs of existing road erosion models. These include limitations of their ancestor hillslope erosion models, the imbalance between representation of erosion processes versus sediment delivery, a lack of representation of subsurface flow interception and the lack of model testing and uncertainty analysis. One of the most fundamental limitations to developing improved models of road erosion and delivery is access to data of an appropriate standard. 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Investigation of forest road surface sediment estimation using two experimental models of SEDMODL and WARSEM

Extended abstract 1- Introduction A bare surface on forest roads is created due to road construction. This surface is the main source of erosion and sediment yield to streams in forest areas. The increase of sediment in streams causes dramatic damage to the quality of water ecosystems and the life of aquatic organisms. Therefore, road engineers should pay attention not only to the cost of roa...

Estimating sediment yield from a paved forest road (Asphalt) (Case study: Watershed Leyle, Ravansar)

Extended abstract 1- Introduction Forest roads are among the largest sediment transport sources to drainage network. So, estimating the sediments of the road network is an important factor in the evaluation of the impact of the road construction. One of the biggest problems caused by the road construction in the forest is the increase in various forms of erosion, such as Gully erosion and mas...

A Catchment-Scale Model of Road Erosion and Sediment Delivery

Unsealed roads and tracks are potentially significant sources of diffuse pollutants, particularly sediment. Identifying critical diffuse pollutant sources and their transport potential can greatly improve catchment-scale water quality management. This study describes the application and ongoing development of a road erosion and sediment transport model in the Moruya-Deua and Tuross River catchm...

Determination of roads quota in watershed sediment yield using SEDMODEL and GIS

During the construction of road networks large area of forests and rangelands will be destroyed in the road path and its margins. This process causes massive amount of soil and rock move from its site and on adjacent lands will be accumulated, that causes increasing environmental degradation. One of the most important problems due to forest roads making is increasing of different erosion forms ...

Recent findings related to measuring and modeling forest road erosion

Sediment is the greatest pollutant of forest streams. In the absence of wildfire, forest road networks are usually the main source of sediment in forest watersheds. An understanding of forest road erosion processes is important to aid in predicting sediment delivery from roads to streams. The flowpath followed by runoff is the key to understanding road erosion processes. On rutted roads, the fl...
